Mommy Bloggers: Attractive to Corporate Social Media Recruiters

By Deanna Falchook (Social Media Professional)

Social media management is an area of business that is growing at breakneck speed. Colleges are fervently creating new curriculum in business, journalism and marketing to cover social media management. Corporations are simultaneously trying to fill positions with experienced personnel who can blog, tweet, pin, post, tag and advance their corporate brand.

In the past five years stay-at-home moms have become entrepreneurs en masse. Some of these mommy bloggers have six-figure incomes from building their personal brands. These ‘Mompreneurs’ are considered powerhouse social media assets for companies. The moms are often romanced by retailers and brands asking them to endorse products on their blogs, accept complimentary guest passes on family vacations at expensive new resorts, or appear as VIP’s to Disney movie screenings. In return they are expected to tweet, pin or blog their experiences. Corporations have acknowledged the value of these women as social media experts. A vast number of the bloggers have business experience as well. Prior to becoming full time mommy bloggers they worked as lawyers, MBA's and successful small business owners.

In 2009, I started mommy blogging and eventually became a vlogger (video blogger). Last January, Maker Studios (a YouTube network with 1 billion views a month) launched a YouTube show called “The Moms View.” This month “The Moms View” expanded its roster and formed a mom’s network with about 20 mommy vloggers . In my spare time I work as a content video producer with Maker/”The Moms View.”  In just a few months, the channel I produce, “You Parent”, has received 560k views. “The Moms View” network collectively has 174 million views since its inception last January (along with 1.5 million subscribers).

Women like myself have tweeted, posted, pinned and raised millions for charities while wearing pajamas in our living rooms. We have formed large communities of like-minded women who craft, jog, bake, balance checkbooks or refurbish chairs.   Many of us have been getting phone calls from recruiters who realize major corporations' need for the skills mommy bloggers possess. We have become experts at social media, engagement, community building, branding and communication.

The prospect of corporate tweeting, blogging, posting is not appealing to all Mompreneurs. But to some of us who have seen our youngest children head off to kindergarten, the invitation to re-enter the corporate world is alluring.  We see our new social media management titles attractive because we get to use skills we are proficient at on platforms we love. I, for one, see working with corporate social media clients as a fantastic adventure to embark on. There is still time and room for personal expression
via posts, pictures and videos, but now we get to take our passion and experience on a new adventure back into the corporate arena.
